Shine on, shine on...tips for healthy skin in the summer sun!

Its that glorious time of year again...THE SUMMER!  May has been an awesome month with temps skyrocketing into the 90's with minimal fluctuation at that!  June-September await us!  For those that drive and walk our feet and arms probably don't match the rest of our body in which sun tanning the rest of our anatomy is of the utmost, post haste.

As much as you've heard to wear sunblock and sunscreen, all of your life hopefully, please note that although the summer demands a more frequent application, it is a year round preventative.  Some people confuse this fact because sunlight is indeed energy and there is no Vitamin D toxicity its safe to increase your exposure.  What your body absorbs is different from what your skin can handle and we have 4 more months of it.

Small doses of the sun are great. Dosage = Intensity x Time.  An hour a day is great with reapplication and ensuring your body is hydrated and stocked with antioxidants C and E (topical or oral).  Using tanning oil, if your skin is damaged and if you burn easily are risky this time of year.  80% of premature extrinsic aging is caused by the sun.

I found this great article on tanning and how to approach tanning.  It's a great read, hope you enjoy and I'll see you in the sunshine!!!

Know your skincare game...YEA!!!

As the world turns...
The weather is continually fluctuating; warm days, winds and rains. Are we staying on target with our skincare? I hope that you took my March "No Makeup" challenge seriously and gave your skin a second look and the break it deserves.
Knowing your body's reaction is one that takes years of analyzing and testing. Within our diets, makeup, and the ingredients in skincare your skin will have numerous reactions that either speak yay or nay. To make it easier and in keeping my word, I will break down a few facts per your skin type that will assist you in choosing whats best for you!
South Asian/Middle Eastern skin: Triggered by sun exposure, your skin has a tendency to incur dark patches. Be extremely careful in utilizing Retin A during the day, picking, overexfoliating and product abuse. Microderm is an awesome treatment for your skin as well as Night creams and SPF. FYI, waxing may also cause pigmentation so be sure your esthetician uses an aloe vera wax for your face and moisturizes directly after.
Latina: As your skin can range from fair to dark, the main problem is melasma. Retin A is also advised for your skin type but be sure to use only in the evening and drink plenty of water.
Black: Uneven skintone and hyperpigmentation due to a lack of skin shedding. Skin cells are bound by an intercellur cement in which if not manipulated by proper exfoliation, the buildup causes a blotchy or darkening effect. More noticeable in the summer, be sure to wear SPF and seek microderm. In addition, AHA's are wonderful but have a proper consultation before you pick up a % that's too active for your skin.
White: The low melanin in this skin type can cause burning and free radical damage which leads to loss of elasticity, sun spots and photodamage. Antioxidants found in fruits, green tea and serums are a great aid in maintaining the skin. Retinol, SPF and nightly rejuvenation will also aid in repair. Minimizing sun exposure is key!
As always, cleanse, tone, use a serum+ moisturizer= Day
Cleanse, exfoliate (1-2x weekly) NO APRICOT SCRUB, tone, serum+ cream/oils= Night
Drink plenty of water, rest, exercise and eat a diet with plenty of protein, fruits and veggies.

Makeup Mondays becomes Muscle Mondays!!!

Forget something??? Are we meeting our March makeup challenge???
________________________________________________________________
If you haven't had a chance to visit FFC yet, I have more great news!!! When you book your spa service with me, you can use the gym for that day...for free!!! Any questions, please email me at Jwilder@ffc.com or catch me working out Mondays after 6pm (Lincoln park), Tuesdays (morning/afternoon Lincoln Park) and Wed/Thurs (West Loop) 3-5pm. We can discuss your skin anytime at either location during those days/times. As I help you reach your goals I too have goals set. As if understanding and training the largest organ wasn't hard enough, now I've picked up a trainer for an even bigger target; Anatomy!!!
As it's peak season for brazilian/bikini waxing, here's a few things you should remember. I always provide these instructions after waxing, but if no one has informed you, here you go!
As a great majority of clients do not experience reactions beyond redness, minor
irritation and swelling around the pore, please remember these post wax rules for a safe return visit:

Avoid the sun for at least 72 hours after waxing and wear SPF.
No heavy workouts for 48 hours and no usage of saunas, steam rooms or whirlpools. Also avoid hot showers and baths.
No exfoliating products (AHAs, scrubs, etc) and loofas for at least
72 hours after waxing as they might further irritate your skin.

Avoid tight clothing as it may result in irritation and ingrown hairs.
If your brazilain is a surprise for your significant other, schedule your appt as early as the spa opens to allow at least 8 hours of healing. While your pores are open you may be prone to bacteria.

Makeup Mondays March NO MAKEUP Challenge!!!

Yes...you read it right!!!

I have had an overwhelming amount of client skin concerns this year at the Benefit counter and after careful Benescanning I can suggest nothing more but NOT to wear makeup. We've analyzed diets, water intake, hygiene and the root of the problem is cosmetics but maybe more so HOW you're applying them and/or removing them. Therefore in an effort to eliminate the problem and acquire a better routine, lets skip a few steps this month; TRUST ME ; - )

You can wear makeup for years and never have an issue but there comes a time when problems can begin to exist. Contrary to popular belief all MUA's don't wear a full face of makeup. It's not that they don't want to its just that sometimes our skin doesn't agree with the everyday regimen of cover-up. MUA'S aren't perfect either.... We go to sleep with makeup on, don't stroke upward and the list continues. However, using expired products, products with comodegenic ingredients, layers or too much product are grounds for clogged pores and a serious disruption within your skin. Baby your skin and always remember less is more.

As a Makeup artist, we represent beautiful and hyperpigmentation, acne, acne scars, blackheads, whiteheads, and enlarged pores are not the epitome of beautiful. I trust and value the opinion of an expert with nearly flawless skin because it demonstrates to me that you not only take the time to correctly apply your makeup but also remove it. Skincare is the most important aspect of your makeup application and if we ever meet, you'll realize the great majority of my questions to you deal with just that. Therefore, your mission, if you choose to accept, is to ditch your foundation or culmination of layers of makeup/cosmetics for the remainder of the month to allow your skin time to breathe, heal, resurface and rejuvenate.

I'm not asking you to go out into the world uncomfortable but explore other options to your application and take better care of your skin. Within my last consultation, I explained to the client to focus on eyes, lips, a light blush/bronzer and undereye concealor making sure to clean her brushes regularly and ONLY wear it when she felt necessary. Sometimes we wear makeup as a mask hiding any and every little thing when sometimes its really not that bad. Let that little pimple heal on its on instead of covering it. Wear an anti-acne serum daily and be sure your moisturizing at night. Get plenty of rest and water and watch your skin do the trick. Treat yourself to a facial but really consult your specialist to ensure you'll have the best service. Never panic or expect rapid changes, it will happen.

Take pictures of your skin's before/after and watch how in a matter of weeks a difference can occur. For an intimate consultation, be sure to schedule an appt with me at the bar. Before I challenge you...here are a few images/descriptions of what you may be encountering, hiding with makeup and want to avoid. Just like life gets stressful, cramped and overwhelming, so does your skin. Be kind and rewind back to the days when you had a flawless complexion...then and only then when you can be committed to cosmetics + skincare, we'll gradually start implementing product. Ready yet???

Blackheads: Deriving its name from oxidation, blackheads are excess oils that turn black on the surface from reflective light or the sun. The only way to clear blackheads is through extractions. Stripping this oil consistently can change your skins clarity and pore size. NEVER use your nails or hair pins to push out the substance, please seek professional assistance.
Blackheads on the nose

Whiteheads in contrast are more of a closed comedo. The follicle still contains oil or sebum but because oxygen can’t reach the follicle, it isn’t oxidized and remains white.

Acne scars: Deep red or brown marks surrounding the area where a papule or pustle was present and was incorrectly extracted

acne scars

Hyperpigmentation: A darkening of the skin caused by sun damage. Acne scarring and mature skin are most afflicted.

Once the months up, I'd be delighted to introduce you to Benefits A-launch, Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow! http://www.benefitcosmetics.com/brand/offers?intid=comp_00000000ZV

Oxygen Wow Hydrating Complex helps boost cellular respiration for a “plumping effect”, protects against environmental stresses and contains vitamins C and E which help prevent signs of aging.

Contradicting that I'm referring makeup??? Not at all...remember, this is a challenge. Your skin will reveal to you what it can and cant handle in a matter of a day but it's up to you to listen. Wearing makeup over 8 hours, redness, itching are all indications that your skin is being pushed to its limits. Chicago's extreme weather alone is enough to incur damage so lets be PROACTIVE instead of reactive.

Interested in learning the Benefit Million Dollar Eye??? Visit me every Sunday/Monday at Sheffield Commons. Want a free brow wax?... Spend $50 or more March 17th and 23rd at Ulta's Benefit Brow bar.

Get it, Glycolic, Gone!!!

The smallest but fastest occurring molecule, Glycolic acid is mainly used to improve the skin. Once applied, the glycolic acid exfoliates by reacting with the upper layer of the epidermis. Breaking down the cement or lipids that hold dead skins cells, new skin cells are produced and it ultimately reveals a fresh, healthy appearance. Skin that shows signs of aging, lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, dry patches and acne scars are excellent candidates for glycolic acid. As there are clinical grade peels out there...are you curious as to what to use and what kind of regimen to utilize to get you on the path to healthy skin AT HOME???

(Only follow these directions or purchase these products if you are a dry-normal-combination skin type. Other skin conditions such as stage 4 acne may need a higher percentage glycolic)

1) First, cleanse your skin with a glycolic cleanser; Mario Badescu, Peter Thomas Roth and Boscia are great options http://blog.bosciaskincare.com/2011/12/06/introducing-the-hottest-new-cleanser-around-a-giveaway/. You may also tone the skin to prep for the wipes.

2) Pat your skin dry and proceed to using an at home peel system. Peter Thomas Roth http://www.peterthomasroth.com/p-64-un-wrinkle-peel-pads.aspx and Dr. Dennis Gross are great options. Start once a week and choose a day when your skin gets plenty of rest such as a Saturday or Sunday.

3) Wait 2-3 minutes...Neutralize with cool water.

4) Finally, its time to moisturize!!! As I only advise peels to be done in the evening picking up night creams within the PTR line are great options! http://www.peterthomasroth.com/p-72-un-wrinkle-night.aspx. Kinerase, Hydroxatone and Boscia are also equally as great!

For more questions on Glycolic, please email me at affinitysoiree@gmail.com
